1/6 online retail visits ends in a purchase

Nov 27, 2010 by

The other day I talked about Comscore research showing that the UK led other European countries when it came to people visiting online retailers.   Now, Nielsen has come up with a stat showing how many of those retail visits end in a sale – 1/6 – or 89 million transactions from 546 million shopping visits in August.

On average that included £156 ($252) spent on average per buyer on electronic goods and £129 on online groceries.  The main reason for shopping online?   “Cheaper prices” (57%) came above convenience (32%) and not wanting to deal with pestering sales staff (29%).

Separately, Interactive Media in Retail Group came out with research showing that online retail sales are likely to break £23 million ($37m) a hour on 6 December, with total online spend for November and December likely to end up being £12.4 billion.
