"Twitter now more popular than the BBC"

Aug 28, 2009 by

Says this headline on news website Netimperative talking about the latest Twitter stats from Comscore. Apparently Twitter now has 51.6 (worldwide) million million monthly users making it more popular than the classified service Craigslist or BBC Online.

As with all statistics this one needs to be looked at a bit more closely though. According to Sysmos, there is a core of Twitter power users – 5% who account for 75% of tweets.

That would however still mean that the really active group of tweeple has gone up from 1.5 million earlier in the Summer to 2.5+ million now. And bearing in mind that this core is disproportionately composed of media and IT types, they have an influence out of proportion to their number.

Comscore also confirms the US dominance of the micro-blogging platform. Comscore says that 59% of traffic comes from the US, a comparable result to the Sysmos stat of 62% of tweeple being US based.
