Vin Diesel and Starbucks: Big on Facebook
If you get a chance, it’s worth periodically glancing at the Facebook page stats produced by Inside Facebook. A lot of marketers scan over Google trends, but a regular look at the most popular Facebook pages is just as useful.
For starters while those of us in the goldfish bowl have been talking up the social media revolution in Iran, it seems most Facebook users are more interested in Vin Diesel (at number two behind Barack Obama? really?), Adam Sandler, Will Smith and Lady Gaga.
A number of brands also make it into the top twenty, namely Coke at no 6, Starbucks at no 9 and Pringles at no 12 – how many companies wouldn’t give their CEO’s right arms to have three million followers like Starbucks.
The stats also throw up a few quirks of Facebook’s audience. For example the social network is very popular in Turkey and so the biggest ‘loser’ in terms of fans is the page devoted to Komedi Dükkani, which I am guessing is a Turkish comedy TV show. Meanwhile no.14 in the fastest gainers is Istanbul football club Galatasary.
And the top gainer overall, worldwide? Lingerie chain Victoria’s Secrets. To paraphrase the famous saying, I guess it really is a case of online travel broadens the mind.
