Cut the cord

An interesting stat from the US via The Media Post. According to Nielson, 17% of Americans have already abandoned fixed telephone lines in favour of going mobile only and by year end that could be 20%.

That’s another indicator that shows that the US is now overtaking Western Europe in mobile (cell) phone uptake. In the UK for example, only 12% of households have ditched the phone jack in the wall (Though you wonder how many will make credit crunch savings by deciding to have one phone, their mobile, only).

According to Nielsen, nearly 60% of so called cord-cutters have household incomes of $40,000 (£25,000) or less, and 55% are renters rather than homeowners. They also skew younger, with 64% in the 18- to-34-year-old age range – which makes sense as if you have a family, one mobile phone in the household obviously won’t work.
